Webmasters corner
Advice for new webmasters...
*Get a website address that reflects your business and is easy to use: Clever domains are useless if too complicated and vague. As are domains too long or full of dashes or numbers. Be very aware of what the average joe computer user is thinking when looking for your site. Cute spellings are less effective than a simple, boring and uncomplicated domain. For example SeattleBoatRental.com rather than BobsOceanGoingBoats.com.
*Never use an AOL, Yahoo,Gmail, Hotmail, Live address for your business email address: Spend the meager bucks to get a specific email address that reflects your business. Using the free email services shows others you are not serious or professional. This is ESPECIALLY true if you use a AOL account! AOL is the internet's garbage hole. The quality of people on AOL is generally low and this is a known fact among internet users. Using AOL for ANYTHING for business is just like having a flashing sign that says "I am an idiot and have no clue as to what I am doing". Gmail, Hotmail and Live are also becoming the biggest source of spam so be aware that their credibility is low. If you have a good domain name, that is your best email address (Service@YourWebsite.com).
*When setting up a website, avoid using contact forms. These are difficult and a hassle for anyone trying to contact you. Put in a real email address specific to contacting you through the website. This can be different than other customer service email addresses to avoid spam. People are suspicious of forms and anyone who does not disclose their email, location or phone numbers.
*Avoid spending money on Search Engine placement. The most effective search engine work can be done by anyone in a matter of minutes with a well designed site and doman name. There are alot of free services out there and good advice is easy to find.
